Sangonera the ‘Sanguinaria’. The origin of the town
In relation to the name of Sangonera there are certain references to the bloody battle of the year 713, during the Muslim invasion. Several historians give the word a Latin origin under the meaning ‘Sanguinaria’, which would refer to that fight that confronted the Arab and Visigoth armies. The roots of the term have also been sought in another confrontation, which occurred in 714 between an army led by Bishop Opas and Amiramech and the inhabitants of the city of Murcia. Some investigations have located the famous battle of Guadalete in the term of Sangonera, locating the origin of the place name in the words ‘Sango’ and ‘Nera’, which are equivalent to ‘Black Blood’, referring to the cruel confrontation between Fernando III the Holy and Mohamed Ben Hud between Alcantarilla, San Ginés and the 13th century Torre Guil farmhouse.
Apart from these theories, which establish roots based on warlike meanings, there are also defenders of the derivation of a phytoponym based on the abundance of plant species in this land, which would be identified under the term ‘Sanqunayra’. This term would refer to the color of the sap of these plants, or that of their fruits. It would also be used in some treatments to cut bleeding. In any case, what it does coincide with is the Arab origins of the town of Sangonera. The evidence prior to the Muslim era is non-existent, pending archaeological finds in this environment, which testify to other cultural presences.

Everything seems to indicate that already at the time of the Muslim invasion the territory of Sangonera was divided. The Arab historians would describe the field watered by the Sangonera with the differentiated payments of the Green and the Dry. The situation and characteristics of the lands on which Sangonera la Verde is located influenced notably the evolution of the town. The Bloodonerean ancestors knew how to take advantage of the large sources that flowed from the north slope of the Sierra de Carrascoy, enough for the installation of people, cattle and some garden crops.
After the Reconquest, insecurity, added to the demographic void, turned the Sangonereño mountains into favorable places for the development of a transhumant livestock. It has been said that the influence of the cattle ranch developed in Sangonera was felt in the depths of the town, in the culture, folklore and custom of a place with a great pastoral tradition.
